2017 Lexus NX 200t Review

Lexus NX 200t Overview
It was our two favorite shopping days of the year and my girlfriend and I were determined to conquer as many stores as we could during Virginia’s tax-free weekend. Our Saturday shopping haul netted multiple bags of clothes, shoes and school supplies. We’d have been in trouble in a lot of cars, but we were driving the wonderfully capacious 2017 Lexus NX 200t, which also provided us with a luxurious cabin from which to conduct our retail assault.
When we acquired a small computer desk at IKEA for her teenaged son, the rear door opened automatically, allowing us to conveniently slip the box inside. We could have even brought along another friend, as the NX’s rear seat provides a power-folding 60/40 split. By the way, when the rear seat is completely stowed, the cargo hold increases in volume to 54.6 cubic feet (up from 17.7 with the rear seat deployed).
An attractive five-door, five-passenger compact SUV, the styling of the 2017 Lexus NX 200t makes a fashionably bold statement in any parking lot filled with the typical silver, white and black whips. In fact, our Lexus stood out even more, thanks to its Mica Red Matador paint. I completely dug the attitude the NX gave off with its grimacing grille and athletic stance solidly perched upon its 18-inch wheels.
Meanwhile, the interior of the Lexus NX 200t provided a calming breath of fresh air. Lexus didn’t cut any corners when it came to the interior design. Imbued with a sporty, yet sophisticated elegance, leather and luxury are perfectly matched to delighful effect. The stylish two toned cream and black upholstery was nicely juxtaposed against ebony trim to showcase a carefully crafted aesthetic.
During the last leg of our day long shopping trip, my girlfriend decided to climb into the back seat to catch a well-deserved nap. There, she enjoyed an enviable experience. Reclining the seat, her vigor was renewed as I chauffeured her to our last stop of the day.
Enhancing the serenity of the upscale interior environment, the NX 200t’s mammoth-sized power moonroof made the cabin feel even more spacious. Even better, as twilight enveloped us, the opening gave us an exquisite view of the heavens. This was even more breathtaking when considered alongside the passenger compartment’s elegantly subtle ambient lighting, which lent the accommodations a cool lounge-like atmosphere.
The NX ride and handling engineers also went the extra mile. On the raod, the 2017 Lexus NX 200t was smooth, yet sporty and a joy to maneuver. I always felt confident, well-informed and in full control. Under the hood, my 2017 Lexus NX 200t was rocking a powerful 235 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which makes 258 lb-ft of torque. This is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. (All-wheel drive is optional—as is a hybrid powertrain). Fuel economy is rated at 22 mpg in the city, 28 on the highway and 24 combined.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera, ABS, brake assist, hill-start assist, LED cornering lights and vehicle proximity sensors. The 2017 NX 200t also has Lexus Enform Safety Connect, which provides stolen vehicle location, collision notification and an emergency call button, with which help is just a touch of a button away when you need it. Other features include parking assist, lane departure warning, radar cruise control, pre-collision warning and braking, as well as a blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert.
While I’m showering the Lexus compact luxury SUV with praise here, it should be noted the NX’s remote touchpad was most unworthy of adulation. The sole interface for the multimedia, climate control and navigation functions, it was devilishly frustrating to use. Extremely sensitive, using it required numerous corrective clicks before the desired action was settled upon. Further, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not offered—yet.
Aside from that though, life with the 2017 Lexus NX 200t was as tax free as our shopping spree. The exterior design is fierce, the driving manners are superb and the interior accommodations are head and shoulders above almost everything in its class.
Pricing starts at $35,285.
